Gerald's art work was always inspired by high calibre international art. He
was a tireless reader of art history and those modern artists whose work had
received international acclaim. He had visited many art galleries in North
American and in Europe. What he read and saw informed his own art and
provided a challenge which he attempted to meet of his own terms. His work
was divided into the following categories:
- Large Paintings of Heads
- People in Art Galleries
- Portraits
- Seascapes
- Abstracts
Although visually quite separate, they were all driven by the same enquiry
which was to explore the use of color, balance, mood and space. His early
upbringing on a remote island located off the coast of Nova Scotia also had an
important influence on his work which remained throughout his life.
